A Few Days Where Time Moves Differently
Down a winding country road, tucked into native forest and old-world gardens, four heritage cabins wait quietly.
Built in the 1940s for forestry workers, now restored with care. Original rimu floors. Vintage wallpaper. Small porches perfect for morning coffee. That particular feeling of sleeping in history.
A Slow Stay at Old Forest School is simply this: a few nights where the only thing expected of you is nothing at all.
No schedule. No programming. No performance. Just you, a cosy cabin, and a place that’s been teaching the art of rest since it spent fifty years doing exactly that.
The Experience
What a Few Days Here Looks Like
Wake to birdsong—tui, kereru, fantails starting their day. Make coffee on your cabin porch. Watch morning light move through the trees. Decide what kind of day it’ll be, or don’t decide at all.
Some people barely leave their cabin porch for three days. Others walk the grounds constantly, discovering new corners. Some bring creative projects—the writing, painting, thinking they never have space for at home. Others bring nothing but a book and let the days unfold.
You might wander the gardens without destination. Sit by the wildlife pond watching dragonflies. Pick fruit from the orchard in season. Play a slow game of tennis with wooden racquets. Make a simple lunch in your kitchenette. Nap in the afternoon without guilt. Walk the meadow as light turns golden. Light your cabin’s fire as evening comes. Sit under stars that aren’t competing with city lights.
The forest doesn’t rush here. The gardens follow their own rhythm. The pond reflects morning without effort. And for a few days, you get to move at that same unhurried pace.
Why Here
What Old Forest School Offers That Home Doesn’t
Physical distance from your regular life. A place your body doesn’t associate with work, errands, obligations. Beauty that doesn’t require your effort to maintain. Permission—from the place itself—to simply be.
The cabins are small, simple, genuinely historic. Not luxury. Not spa-resort polished. Just honest comfort in buildings that have stories of their own. You’re sleeping in a 1940s forestry cottage that’s been lovingly restored but hasn’t lost its character. Creaking floors. Low ceilings. Windows that frame forest views.
The grounds give you room to wander—native bush, formal gardens, wildflower meadows, orchard paths, a spring-fed pond. Enough space to breathe and explore. Not so much you feel lost.
And crucially: you’re alone here. When you book a Slow Stay, there are no other guests, no events, no strangers. The entire estate becomes your temporary world. That kind of privacy is rare.
The Land Itself Has Done This
This property spent fifty years resting. Not producing. Not performing. Just being quiet while nature slowly reclaimed it. Then it was brought back—not to perfection, but to honest beauty.
There’s something about a place that’s practiced rest itself. It knows how to hold that space for you.
The Spaces
Your Heritage Cabin
Four cottages to choose from, each with its own personality. Original 1940s structures restored with care—polished rimu floors, vintage wallpaper that nods to the era, good linen, private bathrooms added thoughtfully.
Tiny proportions. Small porches. That feeling of sleeping in history without sacrificing comfort. Each cabin is private, tucked into the trees, separate from the others.
Book one cabin for solo stays or couples. Book all four for small groups up to 8 people—each person gets their own space, but you can gather when you want to.
Small kitchenettes for simple meals. Basic supplies provided. Everything you need for a few days of nothing much at all.
The Garden Spaces Around You
Garden paths that meander. The walled garden catching afternoon sun. Wildflower meadows that change with every season. The old tennis court aging gracefully. The swimming baths from 1943, original and beautiful even now. The 1933 schoolhouse with its wooden floors and good light. Orchard edges. The pond with its frogs and dragonflies and morning mist.
Native forest surrounding everything—rimu, kahikatea, totara that were here long before the school, long before us. The morning birdsong is almost absurd. Sometimes you’ll hear nothing human at all.
Real, not styled. Imperfect, not polished. The kind of place where rust is beautiful and wildflowers grow where they want.
The Seasons
Each Offers Something Different
Spring (September-November) — Everything blooming at once. Wildflowers. Blossoms. The meadows turning gold. Lambs in nearby farms. Light that feels hopeful and new.
Summer (December-February) — Long days, warm evenings. Outdoor living. Stone fruit hanging heavy. Swimming in the pond if you’re brave. Everything lush and alive.
Autumn (March-May) — Golden light. The softening. Perfect walking weather. Harvest abundance. The kind of beauty that makes you want to sit and stare.
The Practical Things

Local beaches, markets, walking tracks, thermal pools, farm shops. Nothing is organized for you, but plenty exists within fifteen minutes if you want it.
Or don’t leave at all.

Who This Is For
Couples seeking quiet together. Creatives needing space to work on projects that matter. People between life chapters who need time to think. Travelers wanting something more genuine than a resort. Locals needing a night away that feels like another world.
Anyone who knows the difference between a holiday and a pause—and specifically wants the latter.
This works if: You’re comfortable with quiet, simple self-catering, and unstructured time. You don’t need luxury amenities or someone organizing your days. You understand that sometimes doing nothing is doing something.
This doesn’t work if: You need constant stimulation, structured activities, resort-level service, or can’t imagine a few days without constant wifi.
